As the former capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom, the ruins and relics that remain from that period are wonderful sights to behold. While much of Sukhothai's historical areas have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it is the temples in particular that stand out. With so many temples to appreciate, a great guesthouse in Old Suhothai such as the Orchid Hibiscus is a ideal base from which to explore this historic World Heritage Site.
The period of the Sukhothai Kingdom’s rule is known as Thailand’s ‘golden age’, though it was in actuality just a relatively short amount of time. There is little historical record prior to the Sukhothai Kingdom’s rule, and this era is seen as the ‘cradle of the Thai nation’ when a creative revolution was born. The most traditional forms of Thai architecture, language and religious art were shaped during this cultural bloom.
